EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

M.A. College has obtained full-fledged accreditation from FDRE Education and Training Authority (the then HERQA) to educate students for BSc Degree in Public and other health science fields at its Gilgel Belese Campus located in Metekel Zone of Beneshangul Gumuz Regional State.

The degree to be issued to the students upon completion of the graduation requirements set by the college has the following nomenclature: In English: Bachelor of Science in Public Health and the Amharic Version is  የሳይንስ ባችለር ዲግሪ በሕብረተሰብ ጤና አጠባበቅ)

The standard study period to complete the program is FOUR YEARS at Regular program and requires the successful completion of Total ECTS of 264.

Objectives of the Program

General Objective

The objective of the training is to produce competent Public Health professionals who undertake promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services including management and implementation of PHC services compatible to the needs of the population and

The Specific objective of the program is to produce competent graduates capable of;

  • Assessing community health needs and prioritize identified problems
  • Intervening on the identified health and health related problems of the community
  • Promoting health, preventing and controlling disease
  • Providing curative and rehabilitative health services
  • Leading health services and health offices
  • Undertaking operational and problem solving researches

Professional profile

A graduate Public Health Professional will be expected to play the following roles:

  • Provide comprehensive outpatient and inpatient services
  • Handle health related emergencies and casualties including minor operative procedures from the front line field set-up up to the higher level institutions
  • Perform minor surgical and obstetric procedures
  • Provide preventive, curative and rehabilitative health care services.
  • Refer difficult cases to the next higher health institution and do follow-up to guarantee continuity of care.
  • Counseling and teaching of patient with regard to existing health problem of the community.
  • Take leadership and managerial role and contribute for the development of profession.
  • Coordinate and participate as a  leadership role in the  prevention and control of communicable diseases  management;
  • Undertake health research and provide community service
  • Involve in teaching and learning process

Graduate Profile

A graduate Public Health Professional, given the knowledge, attitude and skills acquired from the program is expected to fulfill the following minimum requirement:

  • Assess community health needs and prioritize identified problems
  • Intervene on the identified health and health related problems
  • Plan, implement, lead and evaluate public health interventions programs at Health Care settings.
  • Collect, document, process, analyze, and disseminate health information
  • Participating in health promotion, prevention and control of diseases
  • Provide curative and rehabilitative services
  • Provide early diagnosis, basic treatment and referral of difficult cases
  • Provide comprehensive outpatient and inpatient service.
  • Perform minor surgical and obstetric procedures
  • Perform medical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
  • Mobilize individuals, families and communities
  • Undertake health researches
  • Organize and participate to prevent and control disaster and emergency situations
  • Promote and engage in inter-sectorial activities

Selection and Admission Criteria

Candidates must:

  • Meet the set criteria of the higher education to join the higher learning institutions
  • Be physically fit (at least the candidate should be physically healthy capable of undertaking the four techniques of diagnosis of disease in clinical medicine i.e. inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation)
  • Female candidates will be encouraged

Total EtCTS and Duration of the Program

  • Total ECTS: 264
  • Duration of the training: Four years
  • First and Second year: 2 semesters / year (Ten months of each Academic calendar)
  • Third and fourth year: Year-based (Eleven months)

Graduation Requirement

  • Successful completion of 264 ECTS with a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.0 is mandatory for graduation
  • No “F” grade will be accepted in any course for graduation.
  • Student should score “C” grade and above in all core courses.
  • The student shall score a pass mark (50%) on the final comprehensive qualifying exam on core courses. Failure to pass will result in delay for one to three months and take re-exam. The students shall fill the identified gaps.
